Area Goat Marketing Information

From time to time we have been in contact with this and that meat buyer. We have also located some processing facilities that will process and label goat meat for retail sales for those producers that are motivated enough to go out and set-up at farm markets or sell goat meat direct to buyers or stores. We also hope to list meat goat buyers here as we come in contact with them. We are not endorsing any group over another and are interested in helping the Ohio Meat Goat Industry as a whole. Be cautious anytime working with buyers as it has been noted in some circles that some meat buyers have at times written invalid checks. We have worked with buyers and have not come across this yet but it has happened to others. The buyers we will mention, we have never heard of doing this but just be cautious and definitely prayerful in business dealings. If anyone has recommendations or marketing information, please write in.

note: this does say in "all" thy ways to acknowledge Him, also note that what path He has for us might not necessarily be our fleshly desires/ preferences ... that is where the trusting Him takes place.

Meat Goat Processing Facilities

This is a list of processing facilities that have told us that they could be available for processing meat goats for retail sales (inspected and labeled accordingly). Hopefully this will be a helpful resource for those farms wanting to cut out all the middle men and just go straight from farm to retail sales with goat meat.

Processes meat goats and more currently they have been charging: $60.00, extra cost for labeling, extra cost for sausage and bratwurst and some other cuts. We used to take goats there and enjoyed their brats. Call for current pricing.

Kenny Adams of Adams Boer Goats wrote in:
"We get our retail goats butchered at Copey's in Medway, Ohio. We have an ODA number and it is inspected and we can sell it retail in Ohio. It does cost more to have it processed this way but you have to have the meat inspected with our label on it to be able to re-sell it."

This facility can usually take in goats week to week for processing. From August through December they might would need a couple of weeks advance notice as they become busier during hunting season. Advance notice is typically during the fall for most processing facilities. They can do labels for retail sale with their business name on it or your farms business name on it. If a farm would like to place their name on the label ... those labels would need to be approved through the state before they could be placed on packages. So some advance notice would be required for label approval as well. I am assuming that it would be this way for all the processing facilities that would label for retail sales. The Olde Village Meat labels are currently nice blue labels.

I think their pricing is great. They will do the custom slaughtering. Call for current pricing, recently prices were:
$25.00 for kill and skinned out whole goat.
$50.00 for individual cuts vacuum packed, I believe kill fee included.

"I think this will help lots of people. Pioneer Technical Education Center in Shelby Ohio does goat. They charge a flat fee of $25.00, this is for bratwurst, ground, whatever you want done with it. They do not wrap for resale, that I know of, but I can find out and get back with you. ....The guy is very easy to work with and it teaches the kids how to process. I have had 5-6? goats done there and over all am pleased. Like I said............$25.00 flat fee, this includes killing fee."

We recommend this facility as we have had goats processed by them and get back a higher percentage of what we take in then what we have experienced at any of the other markets that we have taken stock to. They are able to label goat meat for resale. I am certain that the guidelines for labels apply at Richwood Quality Meats as well, so labels would need to be approved for those interested in having their farms meat labeled for resale. We have had some goat processed there this past fall (2007) and the price was $65.00 for kill fee and no extra charges were in effect at that time for wrapping, ground, bratwurst, etc.

Meat Goat Buyers

Buyers will be more interested in working with goat producers that bring them the quality in a meat goat. Helpful advice for those producers interested in building a long term business relationship with a buyer... definitely bring them the quality and they are more apt to remember your farm for quality animals and desire to do business with your farm again in the future. Some things to mention in selling directly to buyers... don't expect premium prices if they are not the weights the buyers are looking for and also the buyers are looking for quality for their customers. Buyers do discriminate against meat goats that are not fed out right and just are not the quality. Sellers should expect price cuts if less than quality meat goats are offered.

Call for current pricing and to schedule a time to bring meat goats in ...they have a nice set-up that does "on site processing" after the customer picks out the sheep or goat. Recently they were paying $1.10 a lb. for optimum sizes. Usually optimum sizes would be 50-70lbs but really might be seasonal according to festivals. They weigh the goats and pay price per pound live weight.

Call for current pricing... they were more recently paying $1.20 a lb. This all works off of supply and demand so prices fluctuate accordingly. This buyer is currently looking for more of the 50lb to 80lb range, boer influence. This buyer has asked Albert Hershberger for assistance in collecting meat kids for his market. Albert Hershberger has the legal for trade scales at the Danville Auction facilities and also pens to hold the meat kids until they can be trucked to the processing facility. To sell to this buyer contact Albert Hershberger at (740) 599-6607 and if he doesn't answer leave a message and mention that you have meat market kids and are interested in selling to the Columbus area meat buyer. If you are not interested in running them through the auction but are looking for selling meat kids direct, tell him this when scheduling to bring them in. They are looking for high influence boer stock with a fuller finish (well fed). I think selling direct to meat buyers and cutting out auction commissions, etc could be a huge savings for goat producers. Cutting out the middle man is usually always a savings.

There is a market for meat goat kids on the dam (milk-fed kids). These kids would weigh typically around 35lbs for market weight. The meat from these young kids is very tender. Zrile Brothers is oftentimes looking for kids around that size.
